Malaysian Prime Minister accuses Goldman Sachs of being involved in embezzlement scandal

Mr Anwar acknowledges that pursuing a lawsuit in the United States would come at a high cost for the Malaysian government. However, he emphasizes the importance of recovering stolen funds and holding those responsible accountable.

In 2009, then-prime minister Najib Razak launched 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a state investment fund aimed at boosting Malaysia’s economy through investments in tourism and green energy.

The fund successfully raised billions of dollars with the assistance of prestigious financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank.

Unfortunately, insiders, including Razak, exploited the fund and diverted over $4.5 billion for personal gains, leading to one of the most significant financial scandals in history.

Last year, Razak began serving a 12-year jail sentence for his involvement in the fraud. Riza Aziz, Razak’s stepson and a film producer who helped finance The Wolf of Wall Street, is scheduled to stand trial in October 2024 for embezzlement charges.

Additionally, two former Goldman Sachs bankers have been charged in connection to the mismanagement of 1MDB.

In March, Malaysian-born Roger Ng received a 10-year jail sentence from a Brooklyn court. Tim Leissner, the former Southeast Asia Chairman and managing director of Goldman Sachs, pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy in 2018 and is currently awaiting sentencing.

Goldman Sachs has chosen not to provide a comment on the matter.
