Major changes for Season 40 of ‘Jeopardy!’ revealed by producer due to disruptions

In the midst of the ongoing Hollywood writers strike, “Jeopardy!” showrunner Michael Davies announced that the upcoming 40th season of the long-running quiz show will feature recycled material and former contestants. Davies expressed the need to be fair to new contestants and ensure they have original material, so the show decided to invite back former contestants who may have thought their chance to play on the Alex Trebek stage was gone forever. The season will kick off with a second chance tournament for Season 37 players who lost their initial game. Winners from this tournament will then advance to a wildcard round against Season 37 and Season 38 champions.

Davies also revealed an increase in prize money for the upcoming season and explained that the material used will be a combination of pre-strike material written by WGA writers and material from previous seasons of the show. He acknowledged that the initial plans for the post-season were derailed and couldn’t provide a timeline for when regular episodes will air. However, he emphasized the importance of having original material written by the show’s writers and featuring the best contestants possible.

Davies expressed admiration for the show’s beloved writers and their demands for higher wages, AI regulation, and better pay from streaming services. Writers play a crucial role in “Jeopardy!” as they write the questions for each episode. The decision to use recycled material for the new season came after reports that the show would do so, which led some contestants slated to participate in the Tournament of Champions to voice their concerns. A “Jeopardy!” representative clarified that there was never any intention of producing a Tournament of Champions for Season 39 until the strike is resolved.

Nevertheless, the decision left some players, like Season 39 contestant Ray Lalonde, feeling disappointed. Lalonde expressed disappointment in the show’s desire to continue shooting new episodes during the WGA strike.
