Seven leading automakers have announced plans to collaborate on building an expansive electric vehicle (EV) charging network across North America. General Motors, BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, and Stellantis are joining forces to invest billions of dollars in constructing high-power charging stations featuring approximately 30,000 plugs in urban areas and along travel routes. The new charging network, set to be operational by next summer, is expected to significantly boost the number of fast-charging options, with each station housing 10 to 20 plugs. This would result in a minimum of 1,500 stations and a maximum of around 3,000. By comparison, Tesla currently operates 2,050 stations and over 22,000 plugs across the United States and Canada. The automakers aim to create an inclusive network accessible to all electric vehicle owners, using connectors compatible with both Tesla’s North American Charging Standard plugs and the Combined Charging System plugs used by other manufacturers.
The collaborative effort not only highlights the automakers’ commitment to expanding the EV market but also underscores their intention to prioritize sustainability. The companies plan to rely on renewable energy sources whenever possible to power the charging stations. Moreover, the stations will be conveniently located and offer amenities such as restrooms, food service, and nearby stores to enhance the overall charging experience and instill confidence in potential EV buyers.
While the construction of this extensive network will require significant time and investment, the automakers are considering utilizing funding from the US government’s bipartisan infrastructure law to support the project.
