Maintenance costs for heat pumps are double that of gas boilers

In the midst of an energy crisis driving up household energy bills, heat pumps have been hailed as the solution to wean Britain’s homes off gas. However, it has come to light that early adopters of heat pumps will face significant costs for maintenance, exceeding those of traditional gas boilers.

The UK Government is aiming to ban the sale of new boilers by 2035, instead urging consumers to switch to eco-friendly heat pumps. But just like gas boilers, heat pumps require annual servicing and repairs when issues arise.

While the average cost of a boiler service stands at £75, industry experts estimate that a standard heat pump service could cost around £150. This expense stems from the fact that heat pump systems are more intricate and time-consuming to service compared to gas boilers.

Mike Foster from the Energy Utilities Alliance trade body emphasizes the importance of annual servicing for all heating appliances, be it a gas boiler or a heat pump. The cost of a heat pump service can vary, but experts believe it often exceeds £150 and frequently goes higher.
