A 50-year-old Texan serving time for mail fraud is on the run after escaping from a prison camp at the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth, according to prison officials.

James Thompson, a Maud, Texas native, was discovered missing from the minimum security satellite camp next to the prison at around 4 p.m. on Thursday, stated Edna Main, the prison’s public information officer.

Described as a 6’2″ white male weighing about 202 pounds with brown hair and eyes, the prison has alerted various law enforcement agencies including the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI. An internal investigation into the escape is also underway.

Those with any information about Thompson’s whereabouts are urged to get in touch with the U.S. Marshals Service at 913-551-6727.

Thompson and his wife, April Thompson, were sentenced to over six years in prison in April 2022 after being found guilty of mail fraud in the theft of more than $4 million from a company based in Atlanta. This company specializes in timberland investment advisory and management services for institutional timberland investors, as per a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia.
