Magnificent Performance by Michigan Basketball Guards Leads to Victory at St. John’s

Following an impressive opening week by the Michigan basketball team, acting coach Phil Martelli refrained from heaping praise on the team too soon.

The Wolverines had been dominant in their first two wins, leading wire to wire, and maintained this form when they faced Marquette in a preseason scrimmage, where they only trailed twice before securing a four-point victory, as confirmed by Martelli. This made the next game against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden crucial to test their potential.

However, Nimari Burnett had other plans.

The Alabama transfer had a career-high game, scoring 21 points and making his first seven shots from the field, to drive Michigan to an 89-73 victory.

JIM HARBAUGH: Why Michigan football should now be considered America’s team

Track meet opens up

Michigan started the game with a bang, hitting 8 of its first 10 shots from the floor, primarily driven by Burnett’s outstanding performance.

Despite a strong start by St. John’s, Michigan’s Burnett scored a career-high mid-range jumper, while McDaniel, Williams II, Tschetter, and Reed Jr. added significant points, giving U-M a commanding lead at half-time.

Put it all together

The second half started slowly, with both teams missing several attempts.

St. John’s tried to mount a comeback, but Michigan responded with an 8-0 run, with McDaniel and Reed shining.
