Magical Montauk Matrimony: Hannah Collins and James Tate Tie the Knot in New York

In May 2018, James Tanner Tate and his two business partners decided to purchase Sam’s Anchor Cafe, a 98-year-old café located in Tiburon, Calif., just north of San Francisco. However, there was disagreement among the partners regarding the choice of an interior design studio to revamp the café. James wanted to hire a different group instead of ROY, the desired studio by his partners. Little did he know that this disagreement would lead to an unexpected turn of events – James would later marry the founder of ROY, Hannah Elise Collins.

Initially, James and Hannah had some conflicting opinions on the cafe’s design direction. James admitted that he had believed he knew best, but Hannah’s expertise and gentle guidance quickly proved him wrong.

During their collaboration, their professional relationship evolved into a close personal bond. They started spending hours talking to each other, whether it was related to work or not. At the time, Hannah was going through a divorce, and James, who had recently gone through a divorce himself, became an incredible source of support for her.

Their feelings for each other deepened over time, but both were hesitant to make a move. In an attempt to make James jealous, Hannah would share stories about her other dates, and James would purposely call her during those dates.

Eventually, James realized that he had to take action before it was too late. He planned a first date for Hannah on February 14, 2020. Unbeknownst to her, it was Valentine’s Day, and James hoped to make it a special occasion. They went out for dinner, attended a comedy show, and shared their first kiss at a bar. However, their public display of affection led to them being reprimanded and kicked out of the establishment. Despite the unexpected turn of events, their kiss became a defining moment in their relationship.

Hannah holds a bachelor’s degree in interior architecture and design, while James has a bachelor’s degree in urban planning and sustainable development. They continued to work on various projects together, and in January 2021, James bought a home in San Francisco, followed by Hannah’s purchase of a home in Montauk, NY in April 2021.

In October 2021, Hannah discovered she was pregnant. As they prepared for the birth of their child, they planned a final trip to Montauk. On one of their last nights there, James proposed to Hannah in their sandy front yard, surrounded by their dogs and their young son, James.

The couple got married on August 26 at the Crow’s Nest in Montauk, with close friend Michael Barnes officiating the ceremony. They hosted a weekend full of activities for their guests, showcasing the best of Montauk. Their honeymoon took them to Athens, Greece, where James had learned to sail during the summer. They rented a catamaran and hired a skipper for a memorable sailing adventure.
