Madison Keys is thriving at the US Open, and her partner and fellow tennis player, Bjorn Fratangelo, may be playing a part in her success.
The 17th seed American pulled off an upset victory over the 15th seed Liudmila Samsonova in a thrilling match, winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the Round of 16 in Flushing.
“Today went exactly as I expected,” Keys commented after the match. “She plays at a very high level, so I had to weather the storm and seize the opportunities when they came. I’m thrilled to have gotten back into the match and played on my terms.”
Following her second-round win over Yanina Wickmayer, Keys acknowledged the role Fratangelo, to whom she got engaged in March, played in helping her maintain focus on the court.
“Everything has been going really well,” Keys expressed. “He keeps track of his wins and losses. Jesse Pegula’s coach, David Witt, jokingly calls him the coach of the year and says he’s coming for his titles. So far, everything’s been great.”
Keys’ impressive performance at the U.S. Open follows her strong showing at Wimbledon, where she reached the quarterfinals before losing to the World No. 2, Aryna Sabalenka.
“He has definitely been a tremendous help. We’ve had some fantastic weeks together,” Keys stated after her Wimbledon elimination in July, according to Tennis Infinity.
