Luisangel Acuna guides Rumble Ponies to thrilling walk-off victory

Luisangel Acuña has demonstrated his ability to achieve success, even when it may not look aesthetically pleasing.

Acuña, who was acquired by the Mets from the Texas Rangers in the Max Scherzer trade, guided the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies to a thrilling 4-3 walk-off victory against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, an affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Acuña’s decisive and well-placed hit occurred during extra innings of a seven-inning game, which took place after the Rumble Ponies finished their nine-inning game that was suspended due to rain on Friday night.

With Hayden Senger positioned as the automatic runner on second base in the bottom of the eighth inning, Mateo Gil delivered a perfectly executed bunt single, advancing the runners to first and third with no outs.

The Fisher Cats subsequently decided to intentionally walk JT Schwartz, loading the bases with hopes of a force play. However, Acuña, an esteemed shortstop prospect and the younger brother of Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr., came up to bat and hit a soft ground ball that eluded Fisher Cats left-hander Mason Fulharty.

Although shortstop Trevor Schwecke managed to field the ball, he slipped while making the throw home, resulting in an error that allowed the game-winning run to score.

In the first game of the doubleheader, in which Acuña went 1-for-5, Binghamton emerged victorious with a 4-1 win.

While Acuña currently plays shortstop for the Rumble Ponies, the Mets, who have Francisco Lindor signed for eight more seasons, aim to enhance the 21-year-old’s positional versatility, a trait he had been developing in the Rangers’ minor league system.

Billy Eppler, the general manager of the Mets, highlighted Acuña’s athleticism as a key factor in their excitement to bring him into the organization.

“We’re thrilled to have a prospect of this caliber join our system,” Eppler stated. “This is a level of talent that is truly exceptional.”
