Lucy Spraggan Discloses Disturbing Experience of Sexual Assault by Hotel Employee While on X Factor

The singer, who is now 31 years old, has revealed details about a traumatic incident that occurred when she was 20. The attack took place after a night of celebration for fellow contestant Rylan Clark’s birthday at a Mayfair nightclub, where members of the X Factor production team were present. Speaking to The Guardian, she expressed her disappointment in ITV for allowing contestants to become intoxicated, stating that it was inappropriate for anyone involved to be drunk. Spraggan questioned how ITV could ensure the duty of care when free alcohol was involved.

In her new memoir, entitled “Process: Finding My Way Through,” Spraggan recounts the rape. According to her account, she became unconscious and was taken back to her hotel by a member of the production team. A porter offered to help her to her room, but later used a “traceable keycard” to gain access to her room and assault her. She woke up the next day filled with dread and confusion. Although she knew she had been raped, she couldn’t fully comprehend it at the time. So she dressed herself and went into autopilot mode.

The production team promptly contacted the police, and an arrest was made. However, Spraggan felt that they were unprepared to handle the situation. While she did receive financial and medical assistance immediately following the assault, she did not receive any support after her attacker was convicted. In her memoir, Spraggan expressed her disappointment that no one reached out to check on her well-being. Even after the trial and conviction, she was not offered rehabilitation or ongoing mental health treatment.

Following the incident, Spraggan left The X Factor during the live shows, citing illness. However, she now reveals that a drug she was taking to prevent HIV caused severe side effects that made it impossible for her to continue in the days after the assault. At the time, she wanted to disclose the reason for her departure, but was advised against it due to potential harm to her future career.

Spraggan has chosen to speak out now in order to rebuild herself and move forward. Despite the challenges she has faced, she has achieved success in her music career, with two albums reaching the top 10 in the UK charts.

In anticipation of the release of her memoir, Spraggan wrote a message on social media, describing it as the beginning of a new era that she finds liberating. She acknowledges the vulnerability she exhibits in sharing her experiences and states that she needs to protect her mental health and well-being, which is why she will be taking a break from social media.

ITV issued a statement expressing deep compassion for Spraggan and commending her resilience and bravery. They emphasized that they have implemented improved oversight procedures since the incident and are committed to ensuring the mental health and welfare of participants. Fremantle, the company that produced The X Factor, also issued a statement apologizing for not doing more to support Spraggan after the assault and acknowledging the need for continuous improvement in their aftercare processes. They respected Spraggan’s decision to waive her right to anonymity and praised her courage in doing so.
