Oct. 5 (UPI) — LSU safety Greg Brooks has been diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer, according to an announcement made by the school. Brooks will now undergo a “month of intensive rehabilitation” as part of his treatment.
LSU revealed that Brooks has been diagnosed with medulloblastoma, which is a tumor located in the cerebellum responsible for balance and coordinated movements.
Chief Medical Officer Catherine O’Neal from Our Lady of the Lake Health, mentioned in an LSU news release, shared that Brooks had a successful tumor removal surgery, and there is no evidence of the cancer spreading. The rehabilitation process will commence in the coming weeks.
O’Neal described the surgery: “For the last three weeks, Greg has been recovering from an extensive surgery to remove a brain tumor that was located between his cerebellum and brainstem.”
She continued, “Greg’s speech and ability to communicate have been impacted, and although he is responsive and undergoing daily physical therapy, he will face months of intensive rehabilitation.”
Brooks, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound defensive back, previously played for Arkansas before joining LSU. In his last season with the Tigers, he recorded 66 tackles, five passes defensed, three tackles for a loss, two interceptions, and a forced fumble in 13 starts.
As a team captain, Brooks accumulated eight tackles in the first two games of this season but missed the following three games. Coach Brian Kelly had referred to it as a “medical emergency.”
“Greg and his entire family and support system have shown incredible strength throughout this ordeal,” Kelly said in a tweet. “Our program continues to pray and support Greg in his fight. We ask that you help the Brooks family and contribute to the fund as he faces the challenges ahead.”
LSU will go up against Missouri at noon on Saturday in Columbia, Mo.
