Lovi Poe: Showbiz’s Most Diligent and Industrious Woman

In Lifestyle.INQ’s August 2023 cover story, Lovi Poe provides an insightful account of her 15-year-long career, the valuable lessons she has learned along the way, and the exciting future that awaits her.

“Do you ever get used to it?” I inquire as Lovi Poe and I stride together. During our journey to the second location for our cover shoot, we encounter numerous individuals who interrupt their activities just to greet her. (Yes, I kept count.) “It must be overwhelming to have strangers approach you all the time and treat you like they intimately know you,” I remark. Lovi grins and replies, “I absolutely love it.” Being the daughter of former actress Rowena Moran and Philippine action star Fernando Poe Jr., fame is an innate part of Lovi’s everyday existence. Nonetheless, Lovi has come a long way since being thrust into the spotlight during her father’s presidential campaign in 2004. With over 15 years of personal experience in the entertainment industry, Lovi’s successful career is a testament to her dedication and hard work. “That’s my dilemma when working on set. I can’t refuse pictures, even when the crowds become overwhelming. I just can’t say no because I don’t want to deny them that simple joy,” she confides. Unlike the expected politeness associated with fame, Lovi’s warmth and genuine affection for others come naturally. Although I have only known her for a brief period, her sincerity resonates deeply. When strangers halt their activities just to exchange greetings, Lovi reciprocates by giving them her undivided attention. “Whenever people approach me and say hello, I am truly grateful, you know? Sometimes I wish I could spend more time with them,” she shares. Lifestyle.INQ’s August 2023 cover shoot takes place at The Peninsula Manila on a bustling Tuesday morning. As we set up, hotel guests shuffle around us, and the lobby resounds with animated conversations. By the time we finish the second layout, the six individuals I had counted during our journey have multiplied to eight. The day is just beginning to unfold. Lovi wears a stunning BLUMARINE cut-out dress, complemented by PRADA silver slingbacks and JEWELMER earrings and ring. “It’s so incredible that I get to wake up every morning and transform into someone else. I mean, what other job offers such an opportunity?” Lovi exclaims. Just four days prior to our meeting, her latest film “Seasons” premiered on Netflix and garnered rave reviews, quickly soaring to the top of the streaming platform. “Acting has always been my dream,” Lovi reveals with a smile. “I consider myself fortunate to be one of those people who actually get to pursue their childhood dreams. It never feels like work for me.” However, acting wasn’t always Lovi’s initial choice. Breezily, she recalls how she aspired to pursue a career in music and eagerly participated in extracurricular activities at school to nurture her interest. “My go-to club was always the glee club. But when it became full, I settled for the drama club instead. I was a bit disappointed because I really wanted to join the glee club,” she fondly reminisces. Strangely enough, Lovi’s latest character allows her to dabble in music once again. In “Seasons,” viewers follow the story of best friends Charlie (Lovi) and Kurt (Carlo Aquino), whose platonic relationship takes an unexpected turn when Charlie decides to play matchmaker and set Kurt up with Jane (Sarah Edwards). “To be honest, Charlie isn’t the most appealing character,” Lovi confesses. “While conceptualizing this story, I noticed that audiences often rally behind the likable characters because, well, they’re good people.” With “Seasons,” however, Lovi sought to depict a character who consistently makes poor life choices, as that’s a commonality among most of us. Presenting such a movie can be challenging, as it evokes cringe-worthy moments and reminds viewers of their own past mistakes. Yet, that’s precisely the essence Lovi wished to convey. In addition to portraying the lead role in the film, Lovi played a vital part in developing the screenplay alongside Dwein Baltazar. “What I adore about Charlie is her capacity for love and her fun-loving nature. The qualities that make her less attractive also make her appealing. Her character is somewhat heartbreaking, and that’s just how life is. I want people to remember that bad decisions have irreversible consequences through her character,” she shares. Drawing from personal experiences, Lovi emphasizes that every relationship, regardless of its outcome, offers valuable lessons. “I always say that there are no failed relationships. That’s how I view Charlie and Kurt’s dynamic.” Lovi’s Journey to Success Born to two actors, Lovi’s inclination toward the arts was inevitable. However, breaking into the world of cinema was not as straightforward as one might assume. Lovi built the foundation of her filmography by taking on roles in independent films. “In the beginning, it was incredibly challenging for me. I recall my first acting experience—I was absolutely terrible. I’m grateful that everyone involved, from my co-actors to my directors, had enough patience with me. The work itself proved to be the best training,” she confesses. As Lovi’s career progressed, her love for acting and filmmaking blossomed. “It’s hard for me to say whether I prefer acting over singing now. It’s a different feeling. Some days, I yearn to sing more, while on other days, I crave acting,” she ponders. With over 70 acting credits to her name, Lovi has distinguished herself as one of the most respected figures in the entertainment industry. She showcases her versatility as an actor by consistently taking on roles that push her boundaries and venture beyond her comfort zone. “Whenever I portray a new character, I go the extra mile. I wasn’t hired to merely stand there and look pretty. I’m not a decoration. I always strive to do my best and exceed the expectations placed upon me,” Lovi asserts. As I spend time with Lovi, I couldn’t help but notice her phone’s lock screen. Glancing at it, I sense a familiar comic book character, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Suddenly, it clicks. I promptly remember a fan-made illustration that circulated online a few months ago, depicting Lovi as the Marvel Studios character “Wave.” It seems fitting for the daughter of “The King of Action Films” to be reimagined as a Marvel superhero, doesn’t it? “I’ve never actually had the opportunity to star in a full-blown action series or movie, which I find quite peculiar,” she reveals. For the past six months, Lovi has portrayed the character “Mokang” in “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,” a television series based on her late father’s 1986 action-comedy film of the same name. “In ‘Batang Quiapo,’ I do have a few action sequences. They even make me perform some stunts. However, it’s not a complete action experience,” she laments. Nevertheless, she hopes to change that in the foreseeable future. “I would genuinely love to portray a female version of Panday.” Her eyes light up at the thought of it. Over the course of 40 years, four different actors have embodied the legendary character of Panday. In 1993, Ramon ‘Bong’ Revilla succeeded Fernando Poe Jr. in wielding the iconic sword as Flavio, followed by Jericho Rosales, Richard Gutierrez, and Coco Martin, respectively. “I believe a female Panday would be fantastic. It’s time to shake things up and transform Panday into a woman, don’t you think?” Lovi conjectures. Amplifying the Voice of…
