Los Angeles Diocese Schedules Prayerful Day in Response to Dodgers’ Event Honoring ‘Drag Nuns’

Believers in the City of Angels are peacefully protesting an event at Dodgers Stadium that plans to honor the “drag nuns” on June 16. Archbishop José H. Gomez of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has invited all Catholics in the area to attend a Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on that day, marking the start of a day of prayer dedicated to the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The decision to honor the group that mocks Catholic religious sisters and stages offensive performances has sparked outrage among the Catholic community.

Archbishop Gomez expressed his concerns on Twitter, stating that on the feast of Jesus’ Sacred Heart, they should remember his love and strive to have a heart like his, filled with compassion and humility. He announced that a special Mass will be held at the cathedral on Friday, and he encouraged everyone to join.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) released a statement urging Catholics to pray the Litany of the Sacred Heart as an act of reparation during the month of June. The statement, co-signed by USCCB President Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, and Archbishop Gomez, condemned the Dodgers’ decision to honor a group that engages in lewd and blasphemous acts.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a charitable drag group that dresses like nuns, will be honored during the Dodgers’ annual “Pride Night” celebration game. The organization raises money for charities serving the LGBT community.

In response to the Dodgers’ decision, CatholicVote, an organization that protested against the event, is planning a demonstration outside Dodger Stadium. The event will feature prayers, speakers, worship, and a procession led by Bishop Joseph Strickland. The organizers hope to show love and peaceful opposition to the anti-Christian bigotry exhibited by the Dodgers.

The Catholic community in California is encouraged to join the peaceful protest to make their voices heard and counteract the offensive award with love and unity.
