The city of Long Beach is hosting a series of events in September as a part of National Preparedness Month. These events aim to encourage residents to be prepared and respond effectively to emergencies such as storms, fires, and earthquakes.
“Recent incidents like the tragic fire in Maui and the impacts of Tropical Storm Hilary serve as important reminders that disasters can occur suddenly,” stated Mayor Rex Richardson. “Residents of Long Beach should take this opportunity to learn about potential hazards and devise plans to enhance preparedness.”
The city’s campaign will focus on raising awareness among seniors and individuals with disabilities, who are particularly vulnerable in emergency situations.
On September 9, Cal State Long Beach will host the Ready Long Beach Community Preparedness Expo, the largest preparedness event in Southern California. This event will be free of charge.
The Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications will also organize a series of pop-up events throughout the month, offering informational materials on preparedness. Details of these events will be announced on the city’s social media platforms. City officials urge residents to follow the agency on Facebook and Instagram at @LBDisasterPrep.
The city’s social media channels will also feature educational campaigns, including tips and question-and-answer sessions, throughout the month.
Residents can also visit the city’s website to sign up for emergency notification alerts. The website also provides information on assembling emergency “go-kits” and other essentials.
“While earthquakes remain the most likely disaster in the city, extreme weather conditions like Tropical Storm Hilary have a severe impact on communities in Long Beach and the surrounding region,” explained Reggie Harrison, the director of the Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications Department. “Major emergencies and disasters can be traumatic and distressing, especially for older adults and individuals with limited mobility.”
