Beloved classics like the Mercedes-Benz W123 (1976-1986), Porsche 924 (1976-1988), and Jaguar XJ-S (1975-1996) often fall within the price range of £2,500 to £5,000 in the used car market. On the other hand, Ulez compliant cars typically cost between £2,000 and £5,000 when bought within 50 miles of central London, placing them at a similar price point to many classic cars.
Garry Short, the managing director of Classic Chrome in Mortlake, noted that although the demand for Ulez-compliant cars has yet to rise at his vintage car dealership, he anticipates a growing interest in older vehicles as the 40-year window progresses.
Short added, “Many people are unaware that cars that are 40 years old are exempt from road tax and the Ulez regulations. There are now cars of this age that are relatively reliable and capable of regular use. We have several Mercedes SLs that fall into this category, and pre-1983 Porsches share the same exemption.”
In response to concerns, a spokesperson for Sadiq Khan stated, “The Mayor and TfL have exempted classic cars from Ulez due to their historic value and the challenges they face in meeting low emission standards. It would be unfortunate if individuals took advantage of this exemption, leading to increased costs for authentic classic car enthusiasts.”
