Lockdown Lifted at Dundee-Crown High School in Carpentersville, IL Following Suspected ‘Swatting’ Incident

CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. (WLS) —
Carpentersville High School was the scene of a dramatic evacuation on Wednesday morning following a lockdown. Hundreds of students were seen leaving the school premises after a threat was called in to the front office at approximately 9:10 a.m.

The school’s officials promptly notified the police, and as a precautionary measure, the facility was placed on lockdown. Upon investigation, it was determined that the threat was a result of a “swatting” incident, which has unfortunately impacted various school districts in Illinois and across the country. The district condemned this illegal activity, emphasizing its negative effects on law enforcement resources and the unnecessary panic it incites within communities.

In this specific incident, the false call insinuated a serious threat, causing alarm among district officials. Nevertheless, a thorough investigation revealed that the threat was unsubstantiated, ensuring the safety of students and staff.

Although no incident was occurring within or outside the building, the lockdown was implemented as a precautionary measure. Witnessing the events, student Alexander Perez expressed his fear, stating, “I saw people crying and running. It was scary, man.”

Chopper 7 captured the sight of hundreds of students leaving the school premises with their hands raised shortly after 10 a.m. All students and staff were safely evacuated, with armed police from various jurisdictions establishing a perimeter around the area to ensure everyone’s safety. Parent Jason Rice applauded the response, stating, “They did a good job of bringing in everybody, this much presence to really evaluate it and see if it was a real threat.”

The school later received an all-clear signal around 11:30 a.m., allowing students to return to the building. Despite this, the school maintained a shelter-in-place status for the remainder of the day, utilizing the field house, cafeteria, and gym as designated areas for students to stay. Normal bus services were provided for those who relied on district transportation.

Additionally, a designated reunification process was established for parents who wished to pick up their children from school. Throughout the week, support services would be available for any students in need. It is important to note that no threats were reported at Perry Elementary School, but a shelter-in-place was implemented there due to the situation at Dundee-Crown High School.

Finally, on Monday, South Elgin High School also experienced an evacuation as a result of a “swatting” call.
