The Archdiocese of Los Angeles made an announcement on Thursday, revealing that around 100 individuals, including members of the clergy, will be receiving a special blessing from the archbishop. This blessing serves as a send-off for their upcoming trip to Lisbon for World Youth Day, where they will have the incredible opportunity to meet the Pope.
Among the group of individuals embarking on this pilgrimage are nearly 100 teenagers, young adults, and adults. This journey is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as they will join a quarter of a million Catholics to celebrate World Youth Day in August. It is worth noting that this will be the first World Youth Day celebrated after the pandemic.
The send-off blessing will be given by Archbishop José Gomez during the 10 a.m. mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.
In a message to young people, Pope Francis expressed, “In these troubling times when our human family, already tested by the trauma of the pandemic, is racked by the tragedy of war, Mary shows to all of us, and especially to you, young people like herself, the path of proximity and encounter.”
The Pope further added, “I hope and firmly believe that the experience many of you will have in Lisbon this August will present a new beginning for you, the young, and for humanity as a whole.”
Pope John Paul II initially established World Youth Day in December 1985, and the first official celebration took place in 1986. This event has grown to become one of the Catholic Church’s largest gatherings and a significant event for young people worldwide.
World Youth Day offers a transformative pilgrimage experience designed for individuals ranging from 16 to 35 years old, offering them a chance to deepen their faith.
One of the highlights of the event is a meeting on August 3 between the Pope and college students from the Catholic Portuguese University. Additionally, there will be a meeting with young members of the pontifical organization, Scholas Ocurrentes.
On August 5, there will be an evening prayer vigil at Parque do Tejo, where young people will spend time with the Pope. Prior to this, the Pope will lead a rosary prayer with sick young individuals during a one-day visit to the Chapel of Apparitions of the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in the town of Fatima.
The series of events associated with World Youth Day will conclude with a morning mass on August 6 at Tejo Park.
