Former Republican Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming stated in an interview on Sunday that she is considering running for president in 2024. She also referred to Donald Trump as the “single most dangerous threat” to the country.
Cheney, known for her outspoken criticism of Trump, served as the vice chair of the House Jan. 6 committee. On CNN’s “State of the Union,” she emphasized that the committee’s investigations reveal that Trump poses a significant risk to our democratic institutions.
“If he becomes the next president, he will undo everything he was prevented from doing by responsible individuals at the Department of Justice and the White House Counsel’s Office. There will be no restrictions,” Cheney warned.
In June, Cheney declared that she would not take any actions that aid Donald Trump in the 2024 election. However, she withheld any further announcements regarding her own plans at that time. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment.
In addition to her role in the Jan. 6 investigations, Cheney lost substantial support within the GOP after being one of the few Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching Trump in 2021. Consequently, she was removed from her position as the No. 3 leader in House GOP leadership. Last year, she also lost her re-election bid to a primary challenger backed by Trump, Harriet Hageman.
When asked if she would rule out a presidential run in 2024, Cheney answered, “No, I’m not.” She intends to support other candidates in the upcoming election and prioritize the election of competent and sensible individuals to Congress.
Cheney emphasized the importance of setting aside partisanship and electing constitutional believers to prevent Trump from returning to the Oval Office. She expressed willingness to support candidates from both the Republican and Democratic parties in order to avoid a scenario where the election is thrown into the House of Representatives, providing Trump with a chance of prevailing.
