Rob S is stepping in with updates as a substitute. Despite the darkness and the floodlights, there is still a respectable crowd at The Oval. Northants have shown great determination and have reached a score of 339-9, largely due to Nair’s unbeaten 132.

Lunchtime Reading

Read a fascinating interview by Tanya Aldred with Bas de Leede of Durham and the Netherlands. (It’s strange to think that someone in the future may stumble upon this and see Tanya’s byline, mistakenly assuming she’s praising herself in the third person.)

Surrey secures a wicket as Jamie Overton takes a low diving catch at second slip and flicks it to Ben Foakes, who completes an impressive catch. Justin Broad is dismissed for 17, giving Tom Lawes his fourth wicket. Northamptonshire is now at 194-7 as Tom Taylor steps onto the crease. It’s worth watching that catch, if you haven’t already.

I apologize for my absence as I will be attending the memorial service of a beloved Guardian staff member. The team will do their best to provide updates, but feel free to chat in the comments section. I will return after lunch.

A wicket for Middlesex! It’s Murtagh once again. Barnard is LBW, and Warwickshire is now in major trouble at 87-5.

Here’s some news for Glamorgan fans to ponder over. By the way, I completely missed the fact that Matthew Maynard was stepping down after five years in charge.

The sun is shining at The Oval, but delayed starts are plaguing other matches at Old Trafford, Taunton, Derby, Grace Road, and New Road.

Tuesday’s Round-Up

Like a poorly kept secret, rain spread across the country. However, it couldn’t prevent excitement from brewing in the Championship’s penultimate round.

Leicestershire, fueled by their victory in the One-Day Cup and desperately needing a win to stay in the promotion race, limited Yorkshire to 155-9 at Grace Road. Will Davis took four wickets, with Finlay Bean top-scoring with 40, surpassing 1,000 runs for the season.

Worcestershire, their promotion rivals, made a solid start against Durham, though not as explosive as the discovery of an unexploded World War II shell in the nearby River Severn. Jake Libby, who narrowly avoided a run-out, also reached 1,000 runs for the second time in three seasons.

Tom Westley also joins the thousand-run club with a score of 50, but the standout performance belongs to Adam Rossington, who finally found form with a century, putting Essex in a strong position against Hampshire.

Essex is chasing the Division One leaders, Surrey, who have limited battling Northamptonshire to 171-6, with Karun Nair scoring yet another half-century.

Good morning from a gusty London. Warm air sweeps away leaves and litter in a whirlwind of chaos. It’s day two of the penultimate round, and unfortunately, the weather played spoilsport yesterday. There was no play at Old Trafford or Derby, and limited play in other parts of the country. However, things are progressing at Lord’s, where Tim Murtagh is making the most of his last appearance at his home ground, and at Chelmsford, where Essex recovered from a slow start. I’ll be heading to The Oval to witness Northants take on Surrey. Play begins at 10:30 am.
