Robert Card, the suspected gunman in the tragic Maine mass shooting that resulted in the deaths of 18 people and injuries to 13 others, has been discovered dead in a wooded area near the scene of the violent attacks. It is believed that Card took his own life after a multi-day manhunt following the shocking violence in Lewiston, Maine. Law enforcement sources have confirmed his death. The victims, officially identified by authorities, ranged in age from 14 to 76 years old.

On Friday morning, it was revealed that a note had been found, although its contents were not disclosed. Search teams had also been examining the river near where Mr. Card’s SUV was discovered, and at one point, a lettuce farm was evacuated due to reports of a gunshot. A shelter-in-place order was lifted, allowing residents in Lewiston, Lisbon, and Bowdoin to leave their homes for the first time since Wednesday night.

“Americans should not have to live like this,” said President Biden in a statement on Saturday, urging Congress to take action to “end this gun violence epidemic.”

Key points:

Who are the victims? Bob and Lucy Violette were tragically killed in Wednesday’s attacks. Bob Violette, a 76-year-old retired Sears mechanic and avid bowler, was identified as one of the victims. He was reportedly killed while trying to protect the children he was responsible for. Bob and Lucy Violette were both passionate bowlers and had started a youth bowling league. Lucy Violette was confirmed to have also died in the shooting.

How did Robert Card get from place to place? The two locations of the shootings—the bowling alley and the restaurant—are just four miles apart in Lewiston. Card’s vehicle, a white Subaru station wagon, was found near a boat landing in Lisbon and contained a long gun. Card’s body was discovered in a box trailer in the overflow lot of the Maine Recycling Corporation. Police believe there is a trail connecting the boat landing and the recycling plant.

Two firearms were recovered from the scene, and a third firearm (a long gun) was found in Card’s Subaru station wagon. These weapons were legally purchased.

Resources have been made available for the victims and those traumatized by the shooting.

The aftermath: what we know. Robert Card’s body was found at a recycling center after a tip from the owner prompted a search. The owner suggested examining the trailers in the overflow lot.
