July 26 (UPI) — Lionel Messi displayed his brilliance once again, scoring two goals and providing an assist, to lead Inter Miami to a 4-0 victory over Atlanta United in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Messi opened the scoring with a stunning goal in the eighth minute. His teammate, Robert Taylor, also had an outstanding performance, contributing two goals and an assist for the Herons.

Inter Miami had struggled with a six-game winless streak prior to Messi’s arrival, but they secured a spot in the Leagues Cup knockout round with this convincing win.

The Leagues Cup is a tournament that features teams from the MLS and Mexican Liga MX, but the results do not count towards the league standings.

The first goal was initiated by center midfielder Sergio Busquets, who delivered an exceptional long pass from behind midfield. The ball sailed over a crowd of players and landed about 15 yards in front of the box.

Messi skillfully controlled the ball and dribbled into the box. He then struck a shot off the right post and followed up with a second attempt, finding the back of the net.

Messi scored his second goal in the 22nd minute, showcasing his dribbling abilities as he penetrated the defense. He then played a precise pass into the box, setting up Taylor for a goal.

Taylor slid in front of the face of the goal to redirect a pass from left to right, evading defenders and finding Messi near the back post. Messi completed the play with a powerful shot past Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

In the 44th minute, Taylor scored Inter Miami’s third goal with an assist from left wing Benjamin Cremaschi. Messi displayed his dribbling prowess on the right side of the box before passing the ball to Cremaschi, who artfully lifted it into the air and tapped it to Taylor.

Taylor’s first touch was a half-volley that found the upper right corner of the net.

In the 53rd minute, Messi provided an assist to Taylor for Inter Miami’s final goal. Messi received a ball in transition and ran about 40 yards from Inter Miami’s goal. As Taylor sprinted up the left flank, Messi played a precise pass into the box. Taylor controlled the ball with a soft touch and finished the play with a grounded shot that beat Guzan’s left leg, hit the right post, and went into the net.

On August 20, Inter Miami will host FC Charlotte in Fort Lauderdale for their next match.
