FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Aug. 2 (UPI) — Lionel Messi displayed his prowess on the field, scoring two goals to lead Inter Miami to a Round of 32 victory in the Leagues Cup against Orlando City. The match took place in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. at the DRV PNK Stadium and was filled with intensity and physicality, resulting in a 3-1 win for Inter Miami.

Messi, also known as “the Flea,” scored in both halves of the game, showcasing his skills and putting pressure on the Orlando City defense. Despite a 95-minute delay due to lightning, Inter Miami dominated possession and frustrated Orlando City with their relentless passing and ability to create opportunities in transition.

The win propelled Inter Miami into the Round of 16, where they will face FC Dallas in the Leagues Cup tournament that brings together teams from MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX.

Inter Miami, previously on an 11-game winless streak in MLS, has now secured three consecutive victories since Messi’s arrival. However, it’s important to note that tournament games do not contribute to the team’s standing in MLS.

Veteran defender Jordi Alba made his debut for Inter Miami in the second half of the match, coming on as a substitute in the 64th minute. His presence on the field added depth to the team’s lineup.

Inter Miami quickly took the lead in the 7th minute with Robert Taylor providing the assist. Taylor dribbled over to the left corner, executed a skillful chip over the defenders, and found Messi in a prime scoring position. Messi controlled the ball with his chest and finished with a powerful left-footed shot.

However, Orlando City managed to equalize less than 10 minutes later when Cesar Araujo capitalized on a deflected shot. The game remained physical throughout, with both teams exchanging words and engaging in confrontations.

Messi received a yellow card in the 21st minute for shoving a defender, highlighting the intensity of the match. Despite coming close to scoring again on two occasions in the first half, hitting the post and narrowly missing a free kick, Messi finally found the back of the net in the 72nd minute, securing his fifth goal of the tournament.

Inter Miami’s next challenge is facing FC Dallas in the Round of 16 Leagues Cup match. In MLS, they will face off against Charlotte in their upcoming game on August 20 at the DRV PNK Stadium.
