Liberty at Last: Rescued South African TikTok Sensation Exonerated from ‘Pretender Medic’ Detainment

A TikTok star arrested for impersonating a doctor has been released, creating a sense of intrigue and surprise surrounding the outcome.

Matthew Lani, a popular figure on the South African social media platform, attracted a substantial following by sharing medical advice and selling medication online.

His arrest took place on Sunday when he attempted to enter a hospital wearing a surgical mask and stethoscope. However, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) stated on Tuesday that they had found “no evidence” to charge Mr Lani with any offenses related to impersonation or misrepresentation.

While this release may seem like a resolution, it’s not the end for Mr Lani. NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane clarified that further investigations will take place, and a decision on potential criminal proceedings will be made once the results are acquired.

The Gauteng province’s department of health accused Mr Lani of disseminating misleading content under the guise of being a qualified doctor, specifically at Johannesburg’s Helen Joseph Hospital.

The tone shifts when Mr Lani’s lawyer addressed the media outside the Johannesburg magistrates’ court, stating that his client’s actions were purely for entertainment and no actual consultation as a doctor took place. This assertion of innocence adds complexity to the situation, leaving room for speculation.

Prior to his arrest, Mr Lani had amassed nearly 300,000 followers on TikTok. However, his account was subsequently closed. Undeterred, he created a new account which has already garnered over 50,000 followers.

The arrest came after doubts were raised about Mr Lani’s qualifications, leading to a weeks-long pursuit by authorities. He claimed to hold a medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand, but the institution denies this assertion. Additionally, the department of education reveals that Mr Lani doesn’t even possess a school-leaving certificate.

In an attempt to mislead officials, Mr Lani allegedly presented himself as Dr Sanele Zingelwa, a second-year medical intern at the Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital. Dr Zingelwe has now filed a fraud case against Mr Lani, ramping up the intensity of the situation.

This incident adds to a growing list of individuals arrested for impersonating doctors in South Africa, with the ministry of health reporting 124 such arrests in the past three years.
