‘Levitating’ copyright lawsuit against Dua Lipa dismissed

British pop star Dua Lipa, who holds Albanian citizenship, performed on Albania’s 110th Anniversary of Independence at Skanderbeg square in Tirana in November 2022. In a recent development, a Florida reggae group called Artikal Sound System filed a lawsuit against Dua Lipa and music label Warner Records, accusing Lipa’s hit “Levitating” of copying one of their songs. However, a Los Angeles federal court dismissed the case on Monday, stating that the group failed to provide evidence that the writers of “Levitating” had access to their 2017 song, “Live Your Life.” While the band has the opportunity to file a new complaint, Judge Sunshine Sykes rejected their request to move the case to New York to be heard with another infringement lawsuit. “Levitating” spent 77 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 U.S. singles chart.
