Wildfire Hearing: Examining Mayor Adams’ Response

As someone who isn’t particularly inclined towards supporting Mayor Adams, I find it perplexing that the City Council is initiating an investigation into his handling of last month’s wildfires (“Hazy eye on mayor,” July 5). While I can’t recall exactly when the warnings were issued by city agencies, there was ample notice provided. If only the council members would pay attention to credible news sources instead of relying on social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok, they would have been well-informed. I truly wonder what the council expected from Mayor Adams in this situation. Forest fires have been a natural occurrence since the existence of trees on Earth. Even my daughter, who resides in Vancouver, Washington with a view of Mt. St. Helens, faces the regular presence of smoke from wildfires in the Northwest. Are council members considering allocating funds for the installation of giant fans? These fans would need to surround the entire perimeter of New York City as nobody can predict where the next smoke front will emerge (unless they believe they can convince all New Yorkers to step outside and blow).

Young Shooting Victims: A Concerning Reality

The news of young shooting victims is both disheartening and alarming, even though they managed to survive (“Save the Children, Mr. Speaker,” Editorial, July 6). In Fort Worth, Texas, one of the victims was a minor, while in New York City, a 13-year-old was involved. It raises questions about why these young individuals were out late at night. While I’m unsure if the Fort Worth victim was accompanied by adults, the New York City case describes the teenager as being “out with a group of friends” just before 1 a.m. Who deems this acceptable? Are there no parents or guardians with the common sense to set boundaries? This reminds me of a local New York TV station that used to inquire before the 10 p.m. news: “Do you know where your children are?” It appears that many parents do not, leading to such dire consequences.

DoorDash Controversy: Unfair Treatment of Workers

I firmly believe that the DoorDash driver should not have been fired for expressing frustration over a meager $5 tip (“A ‘tip’ for him: Try being nice,” July 6). The customer residing in a large house seems to perceive herself as a victim because she claims she cannot drive due to a prior accident. However, she opted for pizza delivery, which is a luxury. Unjustly, this poor DoorDash driver lost his job because of the wealthy client’s tantrum. This is a classic example of America in 2023. How dare an ordinary worker speak up about fair compensation? Considering the time it took for this delivery – from receiving the notification, driving to Pizza Hut, picking up the order, and finally arriving at the customer’s house – $5 for half an hour would amount to a mere $10 per hour. A 25% tip on a $20 order is simply inadequate for someone who uses their own vehicle, bearing the costs of maintenance and fuel required for food delivery. The driver isn’t simply walking the food over in a restaurant, where multiple orders are served simultaneously by waitstaff. DoorDash’s decision to terminate him is unjust.

Heartfelt Condolences for Leandro De Niro Rodriguez

I extend my deepest sympathies to the family of Leandro De Niro Rodriguez (“De Niro Mom Drug Rage,” July 6). They join the ranks of thousands of other families who have lost children due to the influx of fentanyl at our southern border on a daily basis. It is my hope that Leandro’s grandfather, the renowned liberal figure Robert De Niro, will leverage his influence to combat this epidemic of cartel-driven youth fatalities. With his involvement, perhaps Leandro’s death will not have been in vain.
