Letters: Theresa May’s Fight Against Injustice Must Extend Globally

Dear Editor,

I fully agree with Colonel Tim Collins’ assertion that the infantry is not suitable for women. While it is true that the Israeli Army deployed women in the front line during the Six-Day War, the unexpected increase in casualties amongst their male counterparts due to the men’s commitment to protecting the women raises concerns.

For any such experiment, we should draw from the real battle experiences of forces that have already incorporated women into the front line.

Sincerely,

Edward Prince

Dear Editor,

Colonel Collins highlights several valid concerns regarding the inclusion of women in the infantry. However, he fails to mention the potential impact on sub-unit cohesion. The cohesion and determination of small teams within infantry sections and tank and support weapon crews play a critical role on the front lines.

Current soldiers are predominantly young men. Introducing women into these sub-units would inevitably lead to the development of different relationships, which could affect camaraderie and team cohesion. Those who have no firsthand experience of close combat, yet support the integration solely to appease special-interest groups, fail to grasp the potential negative consequences.

While there is no doubt that women possess courage and stamina, the issue of mixing genders goes beyond these attributes. If enough women are willing to engage in combat, it might be more appropriate to establish all-women infantry and armored units.

Sincerely,

Lt Col G P G Robinson (retd)

Care in Crisis

Dear Editor,

I find it disheartening but not unexpected that a report by the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services reveals English councils’ struggle to secure an additional £600 million due to the National Living Wage. The care-home sector, responsible for the well-being of 400,000 vulnerable older individuals, is witnessing closures due to unfeasibly low fees. Unless the government addresses this funding deficit, a crisis in elderly care is inevitable.

Leading care providers have long campaigned for action, and we urge the government to establish a fast-track discharge fund to facilitate the transfer of older individuals into care homes and free up NHS beds.

We are already witnessing the gradual descent into a full-blown crisis, which will spin further out of control if no immediate action is taken.

Sincerely,

John Ransford

Too Cruel for Sport

Dear Editor,

In light of your coverage of the recent death of a Spanish matador during a bullfight, I would like to express my opinion on this practice. I attended a bullfight in Spain back in the late eighties, not out of personal interest but simply to gain an understanding of the spectacle. However, I left after witnessing the second bull’s demise. The animal experienced numerous failed attempts by the matador to thrust his sword into its neck before finally succeeding. It was clear that the odds were stacked against the bull from the moment it entered the ring.

Can we genuinely consider this gruesome display a sport? I strongly believe not. While I understand it holds cultural significance in Spain, this barbaric practice should be brought to an end.

Sincerely,

Daniel Baird
