Less than 50% of Twitter’s Top 20 most-followed accounts have migrated to Threads

Threads, the new micro-blogging service by Meta, has attracted more of Twitter’s top accounts than anticipated. In a span of just five days, 100 million people joined the platform, according to Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta. The migration from Twitter is largely driven by Elon Musk, Twitter’s new owner and most followed account, whose lenient approach to content moderation has alienated the platform’s liberal faction. This has resulted in a decline in Twitter’s revenue by around 40% since 2022.

Despite the success of Meta’s Instagram, many major celebrities are hesitating to join Threads. Only nine out of the top 20 most followed accounts on Twitter have created a Threads account, and not all of them are active on the platform. Figures like Barack Obama, Rihanna, and Cristiano Ronaldo, with hundreds of millions of followers, have not shown interest in Threads. Others, such as Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, and Katy Perry, have set up their Threads accounts but seem to be adopting a cautious approach before posting content.

Surprisingly, some of the influential users who have migrated to Threads include Neymar da Silva Santos Jr., a Brazilian soccer player, who has led over a million of his followers to the platform. Ellen DeGeneres, the comedian and talk show host, has fully committed to Threads and has made jokes about Elon Musk’s controversial reign on Twitter. Singer and actress Selena Gomez has attracted millions of her Twitter and Instagram followers to Threads, although she has been inactive on Twitter since May.

Threads has experienced rapid growth, surpassing its rivals in terms of user sign-ups. In just 24 hours, it amassed 70 million sign-ups and reached over 100 million by day five. Comparatively, Twitter took two years to reach one million users, and it took over five years to surpass 151 million. Despite missing some features, Threads has garnered praise as a “Twitter-killer” app with a seamless registration process. It has even attracted Twitter employees, with around a quarter of a sample of 133 staffers signing up for the platform.
