Legendary Controversy Surrounding Manchester United: Two Icons at Odds

Controversy Erupts After Manchester United’s Defeat to City in Premier League Derby

Following their defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League derby, Manchester United is aiming to secure a victory this season, but in a different competition. On Wednesday (1), the Red Devils will face Newcastle at Old Trafford in the English League Cup’s round of 16, exclusively broadcasted for ESPN Star+ subscribers.

While the on-field performance may not please anyone, a recent controversy off the pitch involving two legends has further heated the atmosphere at the club. And it’s all thanks to captain Bruno Fernandes. On one hand, controversial former midfielder Roy Keane defended the Portuguese player but expressed his dislike for him being the team’s leader, while former defender Rio Ferdinand supported the ‘8’s continuity.

The controversy began shortly after the defeat to City in the derby. Keane praised Bruno’s talent but stated that the Portuguese does not possess the necessary attributes to wear the team’s armband.

“The first thing I would do, after watching him again today, would definitely be to take the armband away, 100%. I think he is a talented player, no doubt about it. But what I saw today (in the derby) was him sulking, whining, raising his arms, and that is just not acceptable. After what we witnessed, I wouldn’t accept it. Fernandes is a brilliant football player. As a captain, he is the complete opposite of what I would want in a captain,” declared the Irishman to Sky Sports.

Ferdinand believes that behind the scenes at his former club, where he was also captain for many years, there is already enough controversy to add another unnecessary discussion, in his opinion.

“To say that is madness. Because one of the biggest issues with Erik ten Hag has been the amount of controversies that have happened off the field. We had the situation with (Mason) Greenwood, (Jadon) Sancho, you had Antony, now you want to create another one with the captain’s armband? Look at how it affected the team when (Harry) Maguire left the team and lost the armband. These are big decisions. The captain’s armband in a football club is a big decision that appears in the news for the wrong reasons, and you want to bring another saga to the table? I don’t think it’s the right decision,” he said in an interview with the YouTube channel Five.

In the current season, Bruno Fernandes has played 13 matches for United, scoring two goals and providing three assists. However, the Portuguese midfielder has not scored since late September and has not contributed any decisive passes in two games.
