Legendary Actor Who Portrayed Dumbledore and Inspired Top Gear’s Test Track Passes Away: Remembering Michael Gambon

Renowned actor Michael Gambon has sadly passed away at the age of 82 after a battle with pneumonia, as reported by CNN. Gambon had an illustrious career spanning over five decades, with appearances on Broadway, in numerous films and TV shows, and even lending his voice to video games. While most people know him for his portrayal of an elderly wizard, car enthusiasts recognize him for his legendary driving skills on the old test track of Top Gear.

In 2002, Gambon gained recognition when he appeared on Top Gear’s “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car” segment. At the time, the show used a Suzuki Liana (known as the Aerio in the United States) for hot laps, which was not particularly sporty, but that was the charm of the segment. Despite owning a Ferrari and having experience as a private pilot, Gambon faced a wet track, posing a challenge. Although he initially struggled with the transmission, it was in the final corner that he made a lasting impression. He went off-track, recovered, and flawlessly conquered the corner—well, almost. In reality, he caught a wheel on the inside of the turn, briefly becoming airborne and nearly rolling the Suzuki.

Fortunately, the car remained upright, and Gambon’s escapade earned him fame (or perhaps infamy) among Top Gear fans. The show even named that corner after him in tribute to his brief flight. Interestingly, the incident didn’t dissuade Gambon, and he eventually returned to Top Gear for another attempt in their new reasonably priced car, the Chevrolet Lacetti (rebranded as the Suzuki Forenza in the U.S.)

Michael Gambon’s presence on screen will be sorely missed, and our hearts go out to his family and friends. Fortunately, we can cherish the memories of these two remarkable clips in his honor.
