Legal Proceedings: Tory Lanez Faces Trial for Alleged Shooting Incident Involving Megan Thee Stallion

Canadian rapper Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion multiple times in the foot in 2020. During the trial, Stallion testified that the shooting occurred during an argument when Lanez told her to dance before opening fire. Lanez was convicted of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of an unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with negligence.

Meghann Cuniff, a legal affairs journalist who followed the case closely, joined CBS 2’s Brad Edwards to discuss the high-profile trial. Cuniff emphasized the significance of every detail in the case, which captivated public interest. She has been providing updates on the trial through her Twitter account since December 2022.

Cuniff compared Lanez’s trial to other high-profile cases she has covered, such as actor Danny Masterson’s rape conviction. However, she noted that the Lanez trial garnered unparalleled attention and debate, especially online.

The shooting incident and subsequent trial have shed light on the issue of sexism in the rap industry, as well as misogynoir, a form of misogyny specifically directed towards Black women. According to The National Domestic Violence Hotline, 45% of Black women have experienced physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking from their intimate partners. The organization also highlights the disproportionate criminalization and imprisonment of Black women who try to navigate and survive violent conditions in their lives.

In her Elle op-ed, Megan Thee Stallion referred to herself as a survivor and reflected on the past three years. Apart from Lanez, his fans, and other prominent rappers like 50 Cent and DJ Akademics, publicly humiliated her, questioning the authenticity of her claims. Lanez even referenced the incident in his album ‘Daystar,’ while Drake made derogatory remarks about Stallion in his song ‘Circo Loco.’

Cuniff pointed out that Judge Hereford, while sentencing Lanez, acknowledged the impact of online harassment and derogatory song lyrics on Megan. This highlights the harassment faced by Stallion and other women online.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón commended Megan Pete for her bravery and vulnerability, noting that women, especially Black women, often hesitate to report crimes like assault due to a lack of belief. He emphasized the need for society to do better for women.

Lanez is expected to request bail pending appeal, although Cuniff believes it is unlikely to be granted. The appeal hearing is scheduled for August 15.

As the case continues to grab attention, CBS News has more coverage available for readers seeking additional information.
