Sept. 14 (UPI) — According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Lee will likely continue to pose a threat into the weekend. Forecasters have warned that it could bring hurricane conditions, heavy rainfall, and coastal flooding to portions of eastern Maine on Saturday.

A hurricane watch has been issued for this area, indicating the potential for hurricane conditions within the next 48 hours.

In the latest update from the NHC, Hurricane Lee is currently located approximately 345 miles south-southwest of Bermuda and moving north at a speed of 9 mph. It has maximum sustained winds of 105 mph.

The Canadian Hurricane Center has also issued a hurricane watch for the coast of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, including Grand Manan Island and Digby to Medway Harbor, respectively.

Additionally, a tropical storm warning has been issued for Bermuda, where tropical storm conditions are expected within the next 12 hours.

Tropical storm watches are in effect for various areas along the eastern United States, from Rhode Island to Maine, as well as Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. In Canada, tropical storm watches extend along the coast of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

The NHC predicts that Hurricane Lee will turn northward and increase in speed on Thursday and Friday. It will initially pass west of Bermuda before approaching the coasts of New England or Atlantic Canada later in the week.

While Lee is forecasted to weaken slowly, it is expected to remain a very large and dangerous hurricane throughout the weekend.

Residents of the northeastern United States and Atlantic Canada are advised to closely monitor the progress of Hurricane Lee.

The storm is anticipated to generate hazardous surf and rip currents along western Atlantic beaches, which could pose life-threatening conditions.

In addition to Bermuda, Lee’s swells are likely to affect the Lesser Antilles, the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. Dangerous surf and rip currents are already impacting parts of the southeastern U.S. coast and are expected to spread northward along the East Coast and Atlantic Canada in the coming days.

Although the core of the storm is expected to pass west of Bermuda, wind impacts are still likely. Outer rain bands from Hurricane Lee could also bring rainfall of 1 to 2 inches to Bermuda on Thursday and Friday.
