Bronny James, the eldest son of NBA star LeBron James, experienced a cardiac arrest during a workout at the University of Southern California on Monday, according to a report from The Athletic.
In a statement provided to The Athletic on Tuesday morning, a spokesperson for the James family confirmed that the 18-year-old freshman basketball player was treated in the intensive care unit and has since been released to general care.
“Yesterday, while practicing, Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest. Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital. He is now in stable condition and no longer in the ICU,” the statement read.
“We ask for respect and privacy for the James family, and we will update the media when there is more information,” the statement concluded. LeBron James and his wife Savannah also expressed their gratitude to the USC medical and athletic staff for their dedication to the safety of their athletes.
Bronny James had recently committed to play basketball at USC, following in his father’s footsteps. He is considered one of the most promising up-and-coming players.
LeBron James, 38, has expressed his desire to play alongside his son. He previously stated that his last year in the NBA would be with Bronny, saying, “Wherever Bronny’s at, that’s where I’ll be,” according to The Athletic.
