Florence Pugh faces censorship for her nude scene in ‘Oppenheimer’

“Oppenheimer,” directed by Christopher Nolan, marks his first R-rated film in over two decades, delving into explicit sexual content, nudity, and explicit language. However, one scene in particular, featuring Florence Pugh topless, has sparked controversy among religious and government officials in India and the Middle East, resulting in censorship after its global release. Pugh, at the age of 27, portrays Jean Tatlock, a brilliant psychiatrist and communist, who finds herself falling for physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy. The uproar began when a tweet from the self-proclaimed “physical media advocate” known as the Disc Father showcased an edited shot from the film, revealing a CGI black dress superimposed on Pugh’s nude body for the sake of modesty. According to sources close to the film’s production, rather than removing the NSFW scene entirely, a “soft base” version was used, showing the actress covered up, to ensure its release in India and the Middle East. The topless scene featuring Florence Pugh has been censored in these regions.

Additionally, Indian viewers have expressed discontent with other aspects of “Oppenheimer.” In one particular scene, Pugh’s character is depicted engaging in intercourse while urging her partner to recite verses from the “Bhagavad Gita” found on Oppenheimer’s shelf. This scene has faced condemnation from Indian officials who consider it inappropriate and offensive. Uday Mahurkar, an information commissioner for the Indian Government, took to Twitter to express his concerns about the film’s portrayal of Hinduism, stating that the scene attacked the religion and was a direct assault on the religious beliefs of Hindus. Mahurkar questioned the motivation behind including such a scene in a film about a scientist’s life, considering it part of a larger conspiracy against the Hindu community.

“Oppenheimer” boasts an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Casey Affleck, Kenneth Branagh, Emily Blunt, Rami Malek, and more. The film follows Oppenheimer’s journey as he becomes known as the “Father of the Atomic Bomb” during World War II through his involvement in the Manhattan Project. An unexpected secret cameo by Gary Oldman, who portrays President Harry S. Truman, adds to the star-studded production. Truman served as the U.S. president from 1945 to 1953.
