Leaked Email Reveals Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ Company, Adopts ‘Work-from-Work’ Approach

Blue Origin, the space exploration company owned by Jeff Bezos, has instructed its employees to return to the office five days a week, citing the importance of in-person collaboration and hands-on work. This directive was revealed in a leaked internal memo obtained by Insider. The memo acknowledges that the company’s offices in some areas are already at capacity or facing space and parking constraints. However, Blue Origin wants to improve desk occupancy rates and believes that having employees back in the office will increase enthusiasm and drive towards accomplishing the company’s goals.

The decision to require five days in the office surprised many employees, especially considering a previous memo from Mike Eilola, Blue Origin’s senior VP of operations, stating that a one-size-fits-all return-to-office policy would not be implemented. In comparison, Bezos-founded Amazon only requires three days in the office, while Google also mandates at least three office days per week. Google has faced criticism for closely monitoring employee badge swipes to enforce this policy, leading to complaints that workers feel treated like children.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has also been an advocate for returning to the office, demanding full-time in-person work from his employees since June 2022. Musk made it clear that remote work would only be allowed with exceptional circumstances and that the main Tesla office must be the designated workspace.

Blue Origin’s push for employees to be in the office regularly is not unique, as other companies and even the Biden administration have faced pressure to resume in-person work. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg criticized the government’s delay in getting federal agencies’ staff back to the office, stating that the pandemic is over and it’s time to end the excuses for empty offices.

Overall, Blue Origin’s decision to return to five days in the office aims to enhance collaboration, productivity, and the company’s mission, but it has come as a surprise to employees accustomed to the flexibility of remote work.
