Leah Remini files lawsuit against Church of Scientology and David Miscavige over claims of harassment, stalking, and defamation

Leah Remini has taken legal action against the Church of Scientology and its leader, David Miscavige, alleging harassment, stalking, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. In a Tweet, the 53-year-old actress announced her lawsuit and provided a link to her Substack, where she shared a press release detailing the defendants’ alleged “mob-style operations and attacks” on her and other victims. Known for her role in “King of Queens,” Remini became a Scientologist at a young age but left the church in 2013 and has since become a vocal critic. In the press release, she stated, “Scientology and David Miscavige have subjected me to psychological torture, defamation, surveillance, harassment, and intimidation for 17 years, significantly impacting my life and career. I aim to put an end to this targeting.” The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, names the Church of Scientology, Miscavige, and Religious Technology Center, Inc. as defendants. Remini seeks to hold them accountable for their alleged practices of harassment, defamation, and other unlawful conduct against individuals labeled as “enemies” of Scientology. Remini is also seeking compensatory and punitive damages for the substantial economic and psychological harm she claims to have endured. The lawsuit focuses on the actions of Scientology’s Office of Special Affairs (OSA), which allegedly monitors both members and non-members and retaliates against perceived enemies through a series of directives known as OSA Network Orders. These directives are said to stem from the founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, and cannot be altered under the organization’s rules. Remini alleges that she, along with her family, friends, and professional associates, faced coordinated campaigns financed and ordered by Scientology leaders starting in 2006. The press release describes the “attacks” carried out by OSA and its operatives, which aimed to “silence, destroy, and ruin” Remini. In her Twitter post, Remini emphasized that while she has personally experienced Scientology’s targeting, she is one of many individuals who have faced similar treatment over the past several decades. She calls for the protection of First Amendment rights and urges the press, law enforcement authorities, and individuals in the entertainment industry to be able to speak out without fear of retaliation or harm from Scientology. Following her departure from the Church, Remini produced and hosted the Emmy-winning A&E documentary series “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.” Miscavige, who has been facing legal action, including a child trafficking lawsuit, has been accused of evading service. Despite this, a judge ruled that he had been officially served.
