In the letter, Lowell raised questions about the circulation of allegedly fake images of Hunter’s WhatsApp messages by Republicans. These messages, according to an IRS whistleblower involved in Hunter’s tax evasion case, implicated Hunter’s father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, in pressuring a Chinese business partner.
The disputed messages allegedly show Hunter claiming that his father was present in the room during business negotiations. Lowell pointed out that the images shared by Republicans were not authentic and had multiple issues, including incorrect formatting and altered content.
Furthermore, Lowell highlighted media reports that confirmed the alteration and manipulation of data purportedly sourced from Hunter’s devices. He concluded the letter by accusing Rep. Smith of perpetuating a false political narrative.
The Ways and Means Committee responded to Lowell’s statement, accusing him of attempting to intimidate the investigation with a retaliatory tone. Rep. Smith emphasized the bravery of the whistleblowers who have faced retaliation from the IRS and the Department of Justice for coming forward with allegations of misconduct and preferential treatment towards Hunter Biden.
The legal team of Gary Shapley, the IRS whistleblower who testified before the Ways and Means Committee, also denounced Lowell’s letter.
