Lawsuit Over Arts District Pedestrian Fatality Resolved as Widow and Children Reach Settlement

An overall settlement has been reached in a lawsuit brought by the widow and children of a 68-year-old psychologist who was tragically killed by a speeding motorist in the Arts District. The trial was scheduled to begin in less than a month.

The incident occurred on May 4, 2020, when Larry David Brooks was struck by a car driven by Ka-Leung Chan on Santa Fe Avenue. On Tuesday, the attorneys representing Brooks’ widow, Anna Marie Piersimoni, and her two children filed a notice of settlement with Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Stern. The exact terms of the settlement have not been disclosed, but the scheduled trial on August 17 has been canceled.

The plaintiffs argued in their case against the city that the street design plan had become dangerous due to changes in physical conditions. They claimed that the city was aware of these dangers and had sufficient time to address them, but failed to do so.

The lawsuit also accused Chan of negligent speeding when his 2018 McLaren 720s collided with and killed Brooks while he was walking in the parking lane of Santa Fe Avenue between Third and Fourth streets. Chan has been charged with reckless driving and felony vehicular manslaughter.

In their court documents, Chan’s attorneys argued that their client was not solely responsible for the accident.
