Dua Lipa is currently facing a lawsuit alleging copyright infringement for the unauthorized use of a recording on remixes of her popular hit song Levitating. The claim has been brought forth by music producer Bosco Kante, who asserts that the British singer used his mobile talk box technology without obtaining permission.
A talk box is a device that enables musicians to alter the sound of a musical instrument by manipulating the frequency content of the sound. According to documents acquired by the PA news agency, Mr. Kante states that he was approached to create and perform a talk box performance for licensing purposes specifically related to Levitating.
The filing indicates that while Dua Lipa had permission to use the talk box on the original recording, the same permission did not extend to any remixes. However, Mr. Kante asserts that his ElectroSpit talk box was indeed used on subsequent releases of Levitating, which include the remix featuring Madonna and Missy Elliott by The Blessed Madonna, as well as another popular remix featuring DaBaby.
It is worth noting that the DaBaby remix has emerged as the most popular version of the song, amassing over 1.6 billion plays on Spotify. As a result, Mr. Kante’s lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles on Monday, seeks compensation exceeding $20 million (£15.7 million).
The legal documents state, “Plaintiff made numerous attempts to resolve this matter outside of litigation, but such efforts were unsuccessful due to defendants’ refusal to cooperate or take responsibility for this blatant infringement of plaintiff’s copyrights.”
As of now, Dua Lipa has not made any public comments regarding the lawsuit.
