Two prominent drug manufacturers, Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, may face a surge of personal injury lawsuits. Patients allege that the companies failed to provide sufficient warning about potential side effects of their diabetes and weight-loss medications, which include stomach paralysis and severe vomiting.

Morgan & Morgan, a reputable personal injury law firm, recently filed a case on behalf of a woman from Louisiana. This patient, who is 44 years old, experienced such severe vomiting after taking the drugs Ozempic and Mounjaro that she required hospitalization and even lost teeth as a result.

According to the law firm, they have signed up 400 clients who assert that their use of these drugs led to the development of gastroparesis, a condition that causes a slowdown or halt in the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine. Symptoms of gastroparesis include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro are widely prescribed for diabetes treatment. Both medications belong to a new class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists, which are also used for weight loss.

These drugs have gained significant popularity in the United States, with analysts predicting that they could create a $50 billion market by 2030.

Morgan & Morgan’s lawyer, Paul Pennock, argues that Lilly and Novo failed to sufficiently inform patients about the risks associated with gastroparesis. He highlights the debilitating and disabling injuries suffered by their clients, who were not adequately warned about the potential consequences.

The law firm states that many affected individuals experience daily vomiting, leading them to seek emergency medical care.

Morgan & Morgan has already signed up clients from 45 states and anticipates that this litigation will eventually involve thousands of cases across the nation.

Novo Nordisk, in response, asserts that GLP-1 drugs have been on the market for years to treat diabetes, and the potential side effects of delayed gastric emptying, nausea, and vomiting are already listed.

The company emphasizes the importance of patient safety and recommends that individuals take these medications only for their approved indications and under the supervision of healthcare professionals.

Lilly similarly emphasizes its commitment to patient safety, actively monitoring and reporting safety information for all of its medicines.

Court documents reveal that Morgan & Morgan filed the claim on behalf of Jaclyn Bjorklund in a federal court in Louisiana.

Personal injury lawsuits are common in the United States and can often evolve into mass tort cases, where multiple plaintiffs seek compensation for harms or injuries caused by third parties. Johnson & Johnson, for example, is currently embroiled in litigation over tens of thousands of claims regarding the alleged cancer-causing effects of their talcum powder.
