According to a lawsuit filed in the Delaware bankruptcy court, Gabe Bankman-Fried, the younger brother of Sam Bankman-Fried and a former lobbyist for the failed crypto exchange FTX, explored the idea of purchasing Nauru, an island nation in the Pacific, to establish a fortified bunker-state in the event of a catastrophic event. Gabe’s intention was to protect his philanthropic allies and create a genetically enhanced human species. The lawsuit, filed by attorneys from Sullivan & Cromwell, aims to recover billions of dollars following FTX’s collapse.

The fascination with bunkers and the acquisition of Pacific islands is well-documented among tech billionaires, especially those who identify as doomsday preppers. Gabe Bankman-Fried’s brother, Sam, promoted a philanthropic lifestyle called effective altruism during his tenure at FTX, emphasizing the maximization of income in order to contribute to causes that benefit humanity. Gabe, along with an unnamed FTX philanthropic officer, considered purchasing Nauru to promote sensible regulation of human genetic enhancement and establish a laboratory on the island.

A representative from Nauru has confirmed that the island nation has never been and is not currently available for sale.

Nauru, situated over 2,100 miles away from Brisbane, Australia, with a population of around 12,000, was the proposed location for an emergency base for the Bankman-Fried team and a select group of effective altruists in case of an apocalypse. The younger Bankman-Fried and the philanthropic advisor discussed other potential uses for a sovereign country in addition to serving as a haven during a crisis.
