Lawsuit Alleges Google’s Infringement on Rights to NFL’s ‘Sunday Ticket’ Package

Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is facing a lawsuit in a US federal court regarding its lucrative deal with the National Football League (NFL) to exclusively broadcast the “Sunday Ticket” package of professional games. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in San Jose, California by lawyers representing residential and commercial business subscribers of Sunday Ticket. They are seeking information from Google related to their case against the NFL and DirecTV, who Google will be replacing as the host of Sunday Ticket. The plaintiffs are claiming $6 billion in damages, alleging that the NFL, its teams, and DirecTV conspired to limit the availability of televised games and artificially raise the price of Sunday Ticket. This programming offers out-of-market Sunday afternoon games that are not otherwise accessible for free on national broadcasters.

Although Google is not directly involved in the ongoing antitrust litigation, the plaintiffs’ lawyers argue that the tech giant is withholding crucial information that could be used to support their case against the NFL and DirecTV.
