Lawsuit Accuses Roblox of Illegal Facilitation of Child Gambling

Roblox, the renowned online video game creator responsible for hit titles like “Murder Mystery 2,” “Adopt Me,” and “Slap Battles,” is facing legal action from the parents of two minors. The lawsuit alleges that Roblox is facilitating child gambling through unauthorized third-party websites. Filed by Rachelle Colvin from California and Danielle Sass from New York, the lawsuit claims that popular online casinos like Satozuki, Studs, and RBLXWild have been using the Roblox platform to accept online bets using virtual currency called Robux.

According to court documents, Roblox is accused of violating its own terms of service which explicitly prohibit simulated gambling with real money or in-game items of value. The lawsuit highlights that Roblox users, most of whom are minors, first acquire Robux through the official Roblox website using their own funds, parent’s credit cards, or gift cards. The users then visit the external websites of the aforementioned casinos, where their Robux wallet on Roblox is linked to the gambling website. The casinos convert the Robux into virtual gambling credits that can only be used within their platforms. These credits function similarly to chips in a physical casino, where users gamble until they either lose or wish to cash out. If their credits increase, users can exchange them for additional Robux.

Roblox, known for its metaverse platform where players can engage in games and transactions, reported 65.5 million daily active users in the last quarter alone. The lawsuit claims that all of these gambling-related exchanges occur within the Roblox platform with the company’s knowledge and active support. The virtual currency, Robux, never leaves the Roblox ecosystem unless it is converted into fiat currency. Roblox has not provided a direct response to the specific allegations in the lawsuit but indicates that bad actors unfairly exploit its intellectual property and branding to create such gambling websites.

A spokesperson for Roblox assured that the company has measures in place to investigate and remove such websites that violate their standards. They also mentioned collaborating with law enforcement when necessary. Ensuring a safe and compliant experience for users on the Roblox platform remains a priority for the company. Representatives for the accused gambling sites, Satozuki, Studs, and RBLXWild, have not yet commented on the lawsuit. Despite the legal challenge, Roblox continues to aim for an ambitious goal of reaching 1 billion daily active users in the long term.
