LAUSD Schools Resume Classes After Tropical Storm Hilary

After the heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Hilary, Los Angeles Unified School District campuses have reopened on Tuesday following a closure on Monday.

“We are back and ready to accelerate our students to their full potential after a day of learning at home,” Superintendent Alberto Carvalho shared on social media as students returned to campuses on Tuesday morning.

On Sunday afternoon, Carvalho announced the decision to close campuses due to the district’s inability to foresee potential storm damage overnight or anticipate challenging conditions for students and staff to reach campuses on Monday morning.

“Our inability to survey buildings and determine access to schools makes it nearly impossible for us to open,” Carvalho explained during a news conference on Sunday afternoon.

Carvalho highlighted the early start times for some students and bus drivers, along with the long distances many employees have to travel to their worksites, as additional factors influencing the closure decision.

Defending the decision on Monday morning, Carvalho stated that it was based on scientific data and the current conditions.

Crews assessed the campuses on Monday and discovered roughly two dozen without phone or internet service. One campus also experienced a minor mudslide, and there were access issues in the Sun Valley area.

By late morning, the affected campuses had their phone/internet service restored, and cleanup efforts were underway, according to the district.

Most independent charter schools in the LAUSD area were also closed on Monday, with a few exceptions.

During the school closures, the district opened 13 grab-and-go food distribution sites to provide students and families with three meals.
