Laurel, Maryland Police Chief Receives Life Sentence for Committing Arsons

Former Laurel Police Chief David Crawford has been sentenced to eight life sentences and an additional 75 years in prison for a series of arsons targeting individuals he believed had wronged him, according to prosecutors. Crawford was found guilty of 12 felony charges in March, including attempted first-degree murder and arson, for a string of fires in Maryland from 2011 to 2020. Investigators connected Crawford to the fires through an examination of the victims, who were either family members or individuals linked to him or his wife. Forensic experts discovered evidence at his home, including a “target list” of victims and a PowerPoint presentation detailing one of the arson incidents. Crawford’s victims included his stepson, his chiropractor’s family, and a neighborhood group leader who had a disagreement with him. Maryland State Attorney Richard Gibson labeled Crawford’s sentencing appropriate given the nature of the crimes, stating that it is disheartening for someone who dedicated their life to law enforcement to engage in such evil conduct. While his attorney argued for a maximum of 28 years in prison, Crawford did not apologize or admit guilt during his sentencing hearing. One victim’s daughter dismissed his mention of God as hypocritical, stating that he had ruined many lives.
