On Monday, Latto achieved her first-ever No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Seven,” a collaboration with BTS singer Jungkook on his debut solo single. Since its release on July 14, the song has already garnered over 100 million streams on Spotify.
Latto expressed that there is currently a wave of female artists flourishing in the music industry, embracing a raw, uncut, and authentic energy that demands acceptance for who they are. She recently partnered with Wingstop for a limited edition meal called “the Latto Meal,” consisting of 21 wings, fries, and two dips.
Ice Spice, Coi Leray, Nicki Minaj, and Latto herself have all achieved top 10 hits on the Hot 100 this year. Similarly, Coi Leray, Minaj, and Latto made it into the top 10 in 2022, alongside Doja Cat, Lizzo, GloRilla, and Cardi B.
Latto attributes the ability for female rappers to be unapologetic to the influence of artists like Lil’ Kim and Missy Elliott, who paved the way and set the tone for future generations.
Latto first gained fame in 2016 as the winner of Jermaine Dupri’s talent show, “The Rap Game.” Instead of signing with Dupri’s So So Def label, she joined RCA Records in 2020 and has since released two studio albums. Her latest album, “777,” reached No. 15 on the Billboard 200 chart and included the hit song “Big Energy.”
“When it comes to our collaboration, Jungkook personally chose me,” Latto said about working with the K-pop star. She added, “As soon as I heard the song, I knew it was a hit. I asked myself, ‘What can I add?’ But yeah, I did my thing.”
Latto described Jungkook as nice, genuine, and humble, and praised his passionate fan base, often referred to as the “army.”
