Latest beta update brings iPhone ‘end call’ button back to its original position in the middle

In the latest developer beta of iOS, Apple has made the decision to relocate the end call button back to the center of the screen. This change, observed by CNBC, brings the button to its original placement and reverses the previous shift that Apple had been considering over the summer.

Previous iterations of the iOS 17 beta had positioned the red “End Call” button in the lower right-hand corner. However, the most recent developer beta showcases the button as vertically centered, alongside two other buttons, towards the bottom of the screen.

It is important to note that this potential user interface modification from Apple is not yet finalized and exclusively appears in the recent developer beta. The beta programs are aimed at software developers and early adopters who test and identify bugs before the fall release, coinciding with the launch of new iPhones.

For years, Apple’s end call button has remained relatively consistent in its placement. However, with the upcoming version, Apple is revamping its call ID feature by introducing “contact posters.” These “contact posters” enable users to select the photo that appears when they call another iPhone user. As a result, the buttons have been repositioned to the bottom to accommodate the larger photos that dominate the screen during a phone call.

Apple has explored similar user interface changes in the past, such as relocating the URL bar in Safari to the bottom of the page for improved ergonomics on larger screens. However, after considering user feedback, Apple reverted some of its planned changes and provided users with the option to move the URL bar back to the top before the official release. Additionally, Apple has also shifted the placement of push notifications to the bottom of the iPhone’s screen in recent years.

Overall, this recent development in the iOS beta showcases Apple’s continuous efforts to refine and enhance the user experience.
