Steve Harwell, the former lead singer and frontman of Smash Mouth, sadly passed away at the age of 56. He died at his home in Boise, Idaho, due to acute liver failure. The band’s manager, Robert Hayes, confirmed his death and mentioned that Harwell was surrounded by his loved ones and peacefully passed away.
Harwell founded Smash Mouth in 1994 and quickly gained fame with their hits like “Walking on the Sun” released in 1997 and “All Star” from their 1999 album Astro Lounge. Their rendition of the Monkees’ classic “I’m a Believer” also became popular when it appeared in the animated movie Shrek in 2001. Throughout Harwell’s career with Smash Mouth, they sold over 10 million albums worldwide.
In 2021, Harwell decided to part ways with Smash Mouth after a performance in Upstate New York where he displayed signs of slurred speech and disorientation. He released a statement explaining his departure, citing the need to address long-standing physical and mental health issues. Harwell battled alcohol abuse for many years.
Despite his struggles, Harwell’s manager, Hayes, described him as a true American original and emphasized his unwavering focus and determination to achieve pop stardom. Hayes also highlighted Harwell’s remarkable achievements considering his limited musical experience.
