Late-game strike secures unbeaten record for Saint Rose women’s soccer team

Graduate midfielder Olivia Boucher scored a crucial goal in the 89th minute, leading the Saint Rose women’s soccer team to an exhilarating 2-2 draw against Southern New Hampshire on Saturday.

Boucher, a late substitute, seized the opportunity in the box after a perfectly executed corner kick from graduate midfielder Elina Seppala, securing the game-tying goal for the No. 3-ranked Golden Knights and salvaging a draw.

The Saint Rose team (11-0-1 overall, 6-0-1 NE-10) took an early 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game. Freshman midfielder Brielle Zink capitalized on a free kick by Seppala just outside the penalty box.

Despite dominating possession and outshooting their opponents 8-3 in the first half, the Golden Knights were unable to extend their lead, and the score remained 1-0 at halftime.

The intensity and physicality increased in the early stages of the second half, but both teams failed to convert several scoring opportunities.

In the 73rd minute, it seemed like the Golden Knights had secured a 2-0 lead with a shot by junior forward Mia Klammer. However, the goal was disallowed after the official ruled a foul on the Southern New Hampshire goalkeeper Claudia Keith.

This decision breathed new life into the Penman, and they capitalized on a defensive mistake by the Golden Knights, equalizing the score at 1-1 with a goal by Carly Schofield in the 80th minute.

In the 84th minute, the Golden Knights had another chance to break the deadlock when Klammer made a run towards the goal and passed to an unmarked Zink. However, Zink’s shot hit the crossbar and sailed high.

This opened the door for the Penmen, who capitalized in the 87th minute with a sensational strike by Alyssa Anderson that sailed over the head of Saint Rose goalie Peyton DeRouen, giving them a 2-1 lead.

After Boucher’s goal to equalize the game at 2-2, both teams refused to give in, resulting in desperate attempts to secure a victory in the final minutes of play.

The Golden Knights will look to bounce back and return to the win column in their next NE-10 matchup against American International at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany.
