Larry Nassar abuse survivor shares her voice following the stabbing of the disgraced sports doctor in prison

Sarah Klein, a renowned attorney, advocate for sexual abuse victims, and the first known survivor of former sports doctor Larry Nassar’s abuse, has spoken out following his stabbing in prison. Nassar, who is currently serving a long sentence, was attacked by another inmate at a federal prison in Florida, as per sources familiar with the matter. According to the Associated Press, Nassar sustained stab wounds to his back and chest.

Federal officials have confirmed that the stabbing occurred on Sunday around 2:35 p.m. ET, and staff members promptly initiated life-saving measures. The injured inmate was subsequently taken to a local hospital for further treatment. However, no details have been provided about the victim or the assailant.

In response to this incident, Sarah Klein released a statement expressing her feelings. She said, “While this assault on Nassar does not bring personal peace to me or the survivors I have spoken with today, it forces us to vividly relive our abuse and trauma at the hands of Nassar and the institutions that protected him, including law enforcement. I want him to face the full consequences of the severe prison sentence he received due to the voices of survivors. I firmly believe that resorting to violence is morally wrong, and death would be an easy way out for Nassar. Therefore, I urge the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Prisons to ensure that Nassar does not escape the magnitude of his crimes and the consequences of his actions.”

Sarah Klein, a former gymnast who personally experienced Nassar’s abuse as a child, is now considered a mother figure for survivors and an advocate for those facing similar circumstances. In recognition of her courage to speak up about the abuses she faced, she was honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

Larry Nassar is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence for sexually assaulting gymnasts, including Olympic medalists. He admitted to these crimes during his employment at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, as well as pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.

During victim impact statements in 2019, numerous athletes testified that they had reported Nassar’s abuse to coaches, trainers, and other adults over the course of more than two decades, but their cries for help went unheeded.

It is worth noting that Larry Nassar’s actions have left a lasting impact, not only on the lives of the survivors but also on the entire gymnastics community. Measures must be taken to ensure that justice is served and that Nassar faces the full consequences of his reprehensible crimes.
