LAPD Confirms Unrelated Deaths of 2 Models in DTLA Apartments – Orange County Register

LOS ANGELES — In the ongoing investigation into the deaths of two models found deceased in their downtown Los Angeles apartments, police have revealed that there is currently no evidence linking the two cases.

The first victim, Maleesa Mooney, 31, was discovered lifeless in her apartment on South Figueroa Street on Sept. 12. Authorities have determined that she was killed, but the exact cause of death remains unknown until further autopsy results are obtained. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner has listed her cause of death as “deferred.”

The second victim, Nichole Coats, 32, was found dead in her Grand Avenue apartment on Sept. 10. After a welfare check was conducted and went unanswered, police received a call reporting a body at the residence two hours later. Like Mooney, the cause of Coats’ death has been listed as “deferred” by the coroner.

The Los Angeles Police Department announced on Tuesday that Mooney’s death is being investigated as a homicide, while Coats’ death is being treated as a death investigation.

The LAPD statement read, “Due to the active nature of these cases, we are unable to provide further details at this time. However, based on our investigations thus far, there is no evidence to suggest that the deaths of Ms. Coats and Ms. Mooney are connected.”

If you have any information related to either case, please contact Detectives Pierce or Marcinek of the LAPD Central Bureau Homicide Division at 213-996-4150 or 877-LAPD-247. To remain anonymous, you can call L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS or visit www.lacrimestoppers.org.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with funeral expenses for Coats. The page describes her as a vibrant and kind individual who had a positive impact on everyone she encountered.

Mooney’s sister, Guyanese pop singer Jourdin Pauline, expressed her heartbreak over the loss on Instagram, praising Mooney’s loving and generous nature. She vowed to seek justice for her sister’s death.
